2025 AHPBCC Annual Conference
Collaborating for Sustainable Progress in HPB Cancer Care, Education, and Research in Africa
August 12-16th, 2025
Protea Wanderers Hotel and Conference Center, Johannesburg, South Africa
Conference Overview
The Africa HepatoPancreatoBiliary Cancer Consortium (AHPBCC) will hold its fourth annual scientific conference in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Building on the success of the previous conferences in Cairo (2022), Accra (2023), and Mombasa (2024)—which saw participation grow from 162 to 264 attendees across 23 to 29 countries—the 2025 event is expected to welcome over 300 participants from Africa and around the world. It will bring together a multidisciplinary audience, including specialists in medical and radiation oncology, gastroenterology, surgical oncology, pathology, radiology, and cancer biology, among other key fields.
HPB cancers in Africa present unique epidemiological challenges, with higher incidence rates, earlier onset, and significantly greater mortality than in other global regions. The 2025 conference will focus on understanding underlying risk factors, developing sustainable research strategies, and implementing practical interventions to reduce cancer burden and improve patient outcomes.
The conference will feature a robust scientific program, with highlights including:
- Pre-conference workshops on grant writing, advanced endoscopy, surgical techniques, and patient advocacy.
- Plenary sessions led by internationally renowned experts, including:
- Dr. Peggy Oti-Boateng – Biomedical science training
- Prof. Eduard Jonas – Addressing clinical management gaps
- Dr. Eileen O’Reilly – Advancements in precision therapies
- Cutting-edge discussions on precision medicine, AI applications in oncology, innovative detection strategies, and clinical training models.
- Opportunities for early-career investigators to gain advanced training, collaborate with global experts, and access research funding opportunities.
With sponsorship from organizations like Mayo Clinic Comprehensive Cancer Center and additional sponsorship opportunities available, the 2025 AHPBCC Conference will serve as a catalyst for research, clinical innovation, and policy advancement.
